Experience the ultimate family retreat at Villa Laranjeiras. Comporta is a magical destination for children, primarily because of its endless, wide sandy beaches and the shallow, gently sloping water—creating a massive, natural playground with not a single hotel or building in sight. Nestled in a protected nature reserve and just minutes from the pristine beaches of Carvalhal, this private holiday villa offers the perfect blend of family-friendly safety and authentic Portuguese charm.
A Villa Layout Made for Families
Inside, Villa Laranjeiras is perfectly set up for family life. The spacious layout features a smart separation between the lively, open-plan living areas and the quiet sleeping quarters, ensuring that early sleepers are never disturbed. Outside, the securely fenced property is built directly on sand, turning the entire garden into one giant, safe sandbox for your little ones to explore.
The bedroom configuration is ideal for up to two families sharing:
- 2 Master Suites: Each with a double bed and a private en-suite bathroom. Both suites offer plenty of extra space to comfortably set up a baby cot right next to your bed (which we gladly provide free of charge).
- 2 Twin Bedrooms: Perfect for older children who prefer a real bed. They share a spacious third family bathroom with a bathtub.
- Capacity: Comfortably sleeps up to 8 guests, with ample room for additional travel cots for toddlers (typically under 3 years).
Your Private Heatable Pool
The centerpiece of the outdoor space is the heatable saltwater pool. Designed to seamlessly blend with the surrounding landscape, it is the perfect spot for children to splash around and for parents to relax under the Alentejo sun, long after returning from the beach.
Immersed in a Nature Reserve
Villa Laranjeiras is perfectly embedded in the Brejos da Carregueira nature reserve. Step out of your front door and you can immediately start a family walk or bike ride through the ancient pine forests and traditional rice paddies. The tranquility and safety of this micro-location is truly unique.

Frequently Asked Questions
Best travel time for families
For families, the ideal travel window stretches from Easter (April) all the way through October. By May, the weather is usually very reliable and warm, while September and October still offer perfect, sunny beach days. During these extended shoulder seasons, the temperatures are comfortably warm (often 24–28°C / 75–82°F), and the beaches are beautifully quiet, offering a truly relaxed atmosphere away from the midsummer peak.
How far is Villa Laranjeiras from the nearest beach?
The villa is located in the Brejos da Carregueira nature reserve with extremely short driving distances to the coast: Praia do Carvalhal is exactly 6 minutes away, Praia do Pego takes 8 minutes, and the iconic Praia da Comporta is a 10-minute drive through the beautiful pine forests.
Safest beaches for small children
The beaches here are extremely safe for toddlers and small children. You will find endless white sandy beaches without any stones or rocks. The shore slopes very gently into the water, especially at our local Praia do Carvalhal. In addition, the Atlantic is often quite calm, particularly in summer. For completely wave-free swimming, the nearby Santo André lagoon (Lagoa de Santo André) also offers perfectly calm, shallow water.
Stroller-friendly paths
The main beaches are easily accessible with a stroller via long wooden boardwalks. However, a baby carrier is recommended in the deep sand on the beach itself.
Family Friendliness
The Portuguese are incredibly family-friendly. At our favorite beach restaurants, the setup is so relaxed that children can often play safely in the sand right next to your table or just over the balcony railing while you enjoy your meal.
Best family activities in the region
There are plenty of fantastic activities for the whole family in and around Comporta. You can cycle through the scenic rice fields, take a memorable dolphin watching tour in the Sado Estuary, or go horseback riding along the beach. For a bit more action, you can take a lesson at what is arguably the most welcoming, family-run surf school you could wish for.
Where can I buy groceries?
A brand new Lidl is located just a 5-minute drive from our front door. Additionally, there are local minimercados in the nearby village of Carvalhal. For a wider selection, the town of Grândola (25 minutes away) offers numerous large supermarkets. We personally highly recommend the 'Continente' in Grândola—it offers a fantastic, authentic Portuguese shopping experience.
Is the holiday villa suitable for children?
Absolutely. The villa is built directly on sand, making the entire securely fenced property feel like a giant, safe sandbox for children. We provide comprehensive kid's equipment (beach toys, baby monitor, etc.) and a heatable saltwater pool. Please note for families with toddlers: the pool area itself is not separately fenced off, so standard parental supervision in the garden is required.
How many bedrooms does the villa have?
Our holiday villa has 4 spacious bedrooms and 3 modern bathrooms, comfortably accommodating up to 8 adults and 2 children. The layout is ideal for two families sharing or a group of friends.
Do you provide baby beds or cots?
Yes, we provide travel cots free of charge for toddlers (typically under 3 years old). Both of our Master Suites offer plenty of space to comfortably place a baby bed. Older children who prefer a 'real' bed will love our Twin Bedrooms.
Provided beach equipment for children
We provide comprehensive equipment so you can travel light. This includes a baby monitor for the house, as well as beach toys (buckets, shovels, etc.), large beach towels, a portable beach umbrella, and a cool box for drinks and snacks. We also offer a wide variety of balls (volleyball, rugby, football), a frisbee, and a children's kite.
Can the pool be heated?
Yes! Our private saltwater pool can be heated to a comfortable 28°C (82°F) upon request, making it perfect for swimming in the shoulder seasons (Spring and Autumn). Please note that out of respect for the environment and local energy resources, we normally do not heat the pool during the winter months (November to March), unless we experience an exceptionally warm and sunny winter period.
